Kay’s May Blog

Little Farmers
After breaking my wrist 11 weeks ago, I’ve virtually forgotten how to type and learnt how to dictate on my phone. So this evening I’m ‘writing’ this message to you in my kitchen with Ruby my Labrador snoring next to me and I’m reflecting on the end of the lambing season with the last one born at 4 am last night!! It’s been a challenging few weeks in many ways, but I’ve been supported by a great team around me both on the farm, in the shop and at home, for which I feel very grateful.
The work doesn’t stop as the end of lambing also means time for essential maintenance on the farm such as fencing, dealing with nettles and thistles, together with the annual  vaccination programmes for the livestock.
This month has also seen the start of the showing season with Evie’s Delight taking reserve Champion at the Nottinghamshire County Show. My wrist meant that I only managed to plait one horse before it started hurting and so once again, a great family friend came to my rescue.
Back at home, we are busy planning our biggest event… Open Farm Sunday on the 7th of June. Everything is booked now, so it should be a great day. Once again, it’s free to attend and no tickets are required and we will be raising money for a number of local charities and organisations.
In the Farm Shop, our summer offer is coming together nicely with new exciting barbecue lines in the butchery, new salads and summer drinks in the café, a fabulous range of Diddly Squat products just in time for the new TV series, a carefully curated range of drinks from a wide range of local beers to a range of wines selected by Weavers of Nottingham our local wine merchants and new lines on our Deli counter ready for the picnic season!
All we need now is the sunshine!
